Applying Hypnosis in the Treatment of Depression is a webinar held over two mornings that emphasizes the importance of utilizing proactive and well-targeted interventions when treating depression. Given the sharp rise in the rates of depression in the wake of the COVID pandemic and what it has taught us about vulnerabilities to depression, as well as recent landmark research undermining the most common view of depression as the result of a neurochemical imbalance, the need to think clearly about depression and its treatment has never been more apparent.

How therapists think about the nature of depression and answer fundamental questions - such as what causes depression - naturally determine what treatment approach they are most likely to take. Likewise, how therapists think about the nature of hypnosis and its potential merits in treatment will shape their use of hypnotically based approaches. As we will discuss and demonstrate, there are some very compelling reasons to want to include hypnosis in the treatment of depressed individuals, couples, and families. There are things that no amount of medication can possibly address, hence the emphasis here on skills, not pills.
The webinar will place an emphasis on skill building in applying hypnosis strategically. There will be didactic presentation, structured practice session of two key hypnosis interventions vital to effective treatment, and the opportunity for discussion as well as Q&A.
Dr. Yapko’s well-known books, which include Process-Oriented Hypnosis, Depression is Contagious, Treating Depression with Hypnosis, Trancework (5th ed.) and Mindfulness and Hypnosis, each break new ground and challenge much of the conventional wisdom therapists typically hold about depression and its treatment. In this workshop, we will pay special attention to the ways in which our social lives directly shape our perspectives and phenomenology and thereby powerfully affect the way we think and feel.
In this webinar program, some of the topics Dr. Yapko will discuss include:
How the global pandemic turned the world into a “living laboratory” and highlighted vulnerabilities to depression
The “earthquake” in the depression world regarding the serotonin hypothesis
How one factor - expectancy - influences every phase of treatment
How our feelings can misguide us when making decisions, leading to poor decisions that make depression worse
The importance of experiential learning in treatment, especially well-designed hypnosis sessions
Hypnosis as a vehicle for promoting automaticity: The merits of dissociation
The role of hypnosis in fostering emotional self-regulation skills
How global cognition affects perceptions, depression, and responses to hypnosis Ambiguity as a major depression risk factor: Using hypnosis to build tolerance
Illusions of helplessness and control and the importance of discriminations
